Clinical work
My name is Mohammed AlHilali. I am a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Newcastle Hospitals, based at the Northern Centre for Cancer Care. I assess people with cancer, discuss treatment options and plan radiotherapy when it is appropriate.
My main clinical interests are upper gastrointestinal and hepatopancreatobiliary cancers, neuroendocrine tumours and rare cancers. I am the NET Oncology Lead.
Radiotherapy
Clinical oncology combines drug treatments with radiotherapy. My work includes conventional radiotherapy and stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR), particularly for tumours in the abdomen. I am interested in how modern image-guided and adaptive techniques can improve precision when they offer a genuine clinical advantage.
The technology matters, but only in the context of the person, the cancer and the aim of treatment. A newer or more complex technique is not automatically the right one.
Teaching and academic work
I teach with Newcastle University and work as Training Programme Director for Clinical Oncology in North East England. This involves teaching medical students and supporting the training of future clinical oncologists.
My academic work has included clinical audit and outcomes research in oncology, including work relating to oesophageal cancer and neuroendocrine tumours. I use audit, published evidence and discussion with colleagues to examine how care can be understood and improved.

Why I make this information
Cancer care involves unfamiliar terms and difficult decisions. Scan reports, treatment aims and radiotherapy planning can be hard to make sense of once a consultation is over. Further questions often come later.
I created this website to give clear answers to common questions. The short videos introduce a subject; the articles provide more detail, sources and context that people can return to. The main audience is patients and families, although healthcare professionals may also find the explanations useful.
